The University of the Cordilleras is taking steps to create an educational environment that welcomes and supports all students, regardless of their backgrounds, identities, or abilities. This commitment to inclusivity extends to both the LGBTQIA++ community and students with disabilities (PWD). Through a series of impactful seminars, informative initiatives, and practical campus enhancements, the university is leading the charge in fostering an environment where every individual can flourish.Championing the LGBTQIA++ Community
One of the standout initiatives undertaken by the University of the Cordilleras was the insightful webinar titled “I’m Confused! Exploring Myself for Today’s Video.” Held on July 22, 2022, this event served as a platform for open and meaningful discussions about the experiences of the LGBTQIA++ community. The event saw enthusiastic participation from 22 attendees, comprising students from diverse university departments and even schools beyond the region.
The event’s spotlight was the presence of a renowned drag queen from Baguio City as a guest speaker, who shared personal experiences and insights. This unique dimension added depth and authenticity to the discussions, creating a memorable and impactful experience for the students. The primary objectives of the seminar are to promote awareness and education about LGBTQ+ issues and provide an opportunity to dispel misconceptions and myths, as well as to share accurate information about sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. This initiative reflects the university’s growing commitment to educate, inform, and create a safe space for open dialogue regarding LGBTQIA++ topics, not only within the university, but also in the community as a whole.
In addition to webinars, the University of the Cordilleras has gone the extra mile to develop and share informative infographics about the LGBTQIA++ community. These resources serve as valuable educational tools, enhancing awareness and understanding among students, and further contributing to a more informed and inclusive campus environment.Empowering Students with Disabilities
The university’s commitment to inclusivity also extends to students with disabilities. The Guidance and Counseling Office plays a pivotal role in actively monitoring these students throughout the academic year. This goes beyond tracking academic performance and extends to assessing the mental health and overall development of PWD students. The office works closely with these students to provide the necessary support, enabling them to achieve their academic and personal goals.
In 2022, the Student Affairs Office was able to identify a total of 14 PWD students enrolled in the University, spread across the three trimesters.
One of the highlights of the university’s support for PWD students was the webinar titled “M.O.V.E. F.O.R.W.A.R.D: Meaningful Outlook to Venture Enthusiasm for Future Opportunities and Renewed Ways Attaining the Road of Dreams.” The seminar, conducted on January 12, 2022, featured Mr. Blaire Heruela as the resource speaker, an alumnus of the university from the College of Teacher Education who is partially blind. The seminar aimed to facilitate self-reflection and personal growth among students, enhancing motivation in both academic pursuits and life in general. An impressive 56 participants attended the seminar, emphasizing the importance of supporting PWD students in their academic and personal journeys. This consistent support for PWD students underscores the university’s unwavering commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment.Physical Accessibility for PWD Students
Beyond the webinars and support systems, the University of the Cordilleras has actively worked to make its campus more accessible for PWD students. Ramps, railings, and other facilities have been thoughtfully installed throughout the university, making it easier for PWD students to navigate the campus with convenience. This practical enhancement ensures that PWD students have access to all the resources and facilities that the university offers.
By empowering the underrepresented community through physical support systems, informative infographics and active monitoring and motivational webinars, the university is creating an environment where all students can flourish, learn, and grow, regardless of their background, identity, or abilities.
The University of the Cordilleras stands as a firm institution in terms of inclusivity. It sends a powerful message: every student, no matter their background, deserves to be welcomed, supported, and encouraged to pursue their dreams. The university is not only celebrating diversity but actively working towards a more inclusive and equitable future.
The University looks after its PWD students and constituents by providing accessibility and ease of access for all.
