University of the Cordilleras Student Election 2022: A Path to Student Leadership

In a highly anticipated event, the University of the Cordilleras (UC) held its student elections, giving students the opportunity to choose their future leaders for the academic year 2022 – 2023. The university believes in nurturing the leaders of tomorrow by providing them with the opportunity to run for a position, engage in thoughtful debates, and present their vision for the university’s future.

The university recognizes the independent studentsโ€™ union and is identified as student organizations wherein the officers are elected. They are composed of the University Student Council as the highest governing body, The Alternative, the official student publication, the International Students Organization and UC Peer Facilitators both categorized as special institutional organizations, the College Student Council which represents the respective colleges, and Academic and Non-Academic Organizations.

Prior to the election proper, a โ€œMiting De Avanceโ€ was conducted via Zoom Meeting wherein the candidates for the Supreme Student Government and University Student Council had a chance to passionately articulate their platforms, addressing issues that matter most to their peers. A Morning session was given for the SSG Candidates, and an afternoon session was for the USC candidates. This year’s election has been marked by the spirited engagement of students from diverse academic backgrounds, all vying for a chance to lead and make a positive impact on their university community.

On September 28, 2022, the 3rd Online Student General Elections was held. The students were given the chance to cast their votes through the Microsoft forms posted in the SDW Canvas course card announcement. Tally and unofficial results were announced a day after the online voting; This day also commenced the 48-hour protest. Finally, the official results were announced on October 6, 2023. A total of 2085 students casted their votes for the Online General Election. This year’s election was indeed a significant event for the University. With a diverse pool of candidates from various courses, the student body is poised to select individuals who will champion their interests, aspirations, and concerns.

The election process at UC is a testament to the values of wise choice-making and active participation. It’s an opportunity for the student body to shape their own educational experience. It’s a platform for young leaders to emerge and take charge, making a positive impact not only on campus life but also within the broader Cordilleras community.

This event is a reflection of the university’s commitment to nurturing responsible and engaged citizens. It’s a reminder that, at UC, students are more than just learners; they are active participants in the democratic process, learning firsthand the principles of leadership, accountability, and governance.
