By: Janine Ericka R. Paneda

A total of 246 electronic cigarettes (vapes) were confiscated from UC students and crushed by the officials of UC and the Baguio City Public Order and Safety Division during a ceremonial crushing in the University on October 30, 2023.

This affirmative action strengthens the University’s policy, regarding the banning of possession and use of e-cigarettes and tobacco products in its premises and helps in its more significant endeavor of making the University environment healthier and more conducive. This policy fully aligns with Baguio City Ordinance No. 34, Series of 2017, and Resolution No. 257, clearly urging schools, universities and other learning institution in the City of Baguio to strictly implement the banning the entry, possession, use and sale of vape products.

This fosters a culture of health awareness and serves as a positive example for younger generations while creating a healthier campus environment in accordance with local regulations. Ultimately, this effort illustrates the important role students can play in advocating for safer, healthier communities. This commitment reflects a broader focus on public health and safety, contributing to a cleaner and more enjoyable atmosphere for students, staff, and visitors alike.

This ceremony demonstrated the University of the Cordillerasโ€™ supports on the city government’s advocacy for a Smoke-Free Baguio. The university mounted an active engagement, together with the cityโ€™s Smoke-Free Taskforce

Right after the crushing ceremony, participated by the UC Student Affairs Services (SAS) and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in collaboration with Baguio Cityโ€™s Public Order and Safety Division, the destroyed vaping devices were collected and transferred to the Baguio City Health Services Office for proper disposal, ensuring effective waste management of these hazardous items.
