The University of the Cordilleras hosted the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Balik Scientist Program seminar-workshop on “Sustainability, Water Quality, and Citizen Science: Empowering the Community Through Hands-on Environmental Monitoring” on July 24 at the UC Auditorium.
The workshop featured DOST Balik Scientist Dr. Elmer-Rico E. Mojica, professor of Analytical Chemistry at Pace University in New York, USA, Mr. Ralph Lauren Alomia of the University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos, and Ms. Hazel Joyce M. Ramirez of the University of the Philippines Diliman.
Dr. Mojica underscored the vital role of scientific evidence in environmental protection, emphasizing that reliable data serves as the foundation for informed decisions and meaningful community action in safeguarding water resources.
Mr. Alomia discussed methods for investigating local water quality, while Ms. Ramirez highlighted the role of citizen science as an effective tool for environmental education and public participation in sustainability initiatives.
A key feature of the workshop was the hands-on water quality testing, where participants brought water samples from their respective communities for analysis, allowing them to better understand the condition and safety of their local water sources.
The seminar-workshop gathered members of the UC community including students, faculty, and non-teaching staff, along with representatives from higher education institutions within and outside the Cordillera Administrative Region, DOST-CAR, the Department of EducationโBaguio City, and various barangays in Baguio City.
