The University of the Cordilleras welcomed its first Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Balik Scientist, Dr. Elmer-Rico E. Mojica, on July 6, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the University’s efforts to strengthen forensic science research, laboratory development, and innovation.

Through the DOST Balik Scientist Program (BSP), Dr. Mojica, Professor and Associate Program Director of the Forensic Science Program at Pace University, New York, USA, will help advance UC’s forensic science capabilities accelerating forensic and clinical analytical methods, supporting the establishment of a Gas Chromatographyโ€“Mass Spectrometry laboratory, integrating AI-assisted data analytics, mentoring faculty and student researchers, and expanding local and international research collaborations.

Dr. Mojica also underscored the importance of developing research solutions that respond to Philippine realities, encouraging the adaptation of global best practices to local needs, available resources, and existing conditions to ensure meaningful scientific impact.
