Campus journalists from the different academic colleges of the University of the Cordilleras strengthened their journalistic skills and deepened their commitment to ethical storytelling during The Alternative’s 1st Intercollegiate Press Conference, held on July 16 and 20, 2026.
Organized by The Alternative, the University’s official student publication, the two-day conference brought together student journalists from the University’s various academic colleges for lectures led by accomplished journalists, writers, and media practitioners. Through their sessions, the speakers shared valuable insights on truth-seeking, ethical storytelling, fact-checking, and responsible journalism in the face of misinformation.
Participants learned from Atty. Joel Rodriguez Dizon, lawyer, educator, journalist, editor, and writer, who underscored the vital role of fact-checking, ethics, and accountability in combating misinformation. They also gained valuable insights from Heather Ann F. Pulido, an award-winning Kankanaey-Ibaloi writer and co-founder of ili press, who encouraged young writers to embrace authentic storytelling rooted in culture and identity. Completing the lineup was Lilian Tiburcio, broadcast journalist and documentarist from GMA News and Public Affairs, who inspired participants through her experiences in community-centered reporting and documentary journalism that amplifies marginalized voices.
Complementing the lectures, participants also took part in an intensive Master Class facilitated by members of The Alternative, where they honed their competencies in news writing, feature writing, editorial writing, copyreading and headline writing, photojournalism, broadcasting, and other campus journalism disciplines through collaborative learning and practical exercises.
